What is OrangeTill and how does it work? ▼
OrangeTill is a Bitcoin point-of-sale tool for small businesses. When a customer wants to pay with Bitcoin, you enter the sale amount in OrangeTill, and it generates a QR code the customer scans with their wallet app. The payment goes directly from the customer's wallet to yours — OrangeTill never touches the money. There are no percentage fees on transactions. You pay a flat monthly or annual subscription.
What do I need to get started? ▼
Three things:
(1) An OrangeTill subscription — sign up at
orangetill.com.
(2) A Bitcoin wallet app on your phone to receive payments — our
Get a Wallet guide walks you through the best options.
(3) Any device with a browser and Wi-Fi to run OrangeTill at your register — a tablet, phone, or laptop all work fine.
How do I set up OrangeTill for the first time? ▼
- Subscribe at orangetill.com
- Open orangetill.io in your browser and log in with your email
- Go to Settings and enter your Bitcoin wallet address
- Tap New Payment, enter a test amount, and confirm the QR code displays
- You're ready to accept Bitcoin
The in-app setup wizard walks through this step by step — tap
Get Started on the home screen if you'd like Hodl to guide you through it.
Do I need to download an app? ▼
No download required. OrangeTill is a Progressive Web App (PWA) — it runs in any modern browser at
orangetill.io. You can optionally install it to your home screen for a full-screen, app-like experience. See our
PWA install guide for step-by-step instructions on every device.
What devices can I use OrangeTill on? ▼
Any device with a modern browser and Wi-Fi: iPad, iPhone, Android tablet, Android phone, Amazon Fire tablet, Mac, Windows PC, Chromebook. The recommended setup for a dedicated counter terminal is a tablet on a stand — see our
tablet and stand guide for recommendations at every price point.
What does OrangeTill support? ▼
OrangeTill supports Bitcoin and the Lightning Network. On-chain Bitcoin works for any purchase; Lightning is ideal for small, instant payments. That’s it — no altcoins, no confusion.
How does a customer pay with Bitcoin at my register? ▼
You enter the sale amount in OrangeTill. The app generates a QR code showing your wallet address and the Bitcoin amount. The customer opens their wallet app, taps Send or Scan, and scans your QR code. They confirm the payment on their end — and it's done. For Bitcoin, confirmation typically takes a few minutes. Lightning Network payments are instant.
How long do payments take to confirm? ▼
It depends on the coin:
- Lightning Network: Instant — typically under 3 seconds
- Bitcoin (on-chain): Usually 10–30 minutes for the first confirmation. Many merchants accept 0-confirmation for small purchases.
For fast service counters, Lightning is the most practical option.
Customer says payment didn't go through ▼
Bitcoin payments can take a few minutes to confirm on the blockchain. Ask the customer to check their wallet app for a pending transaction. Do not tap "Payment Received" until you've confirmed the payment arrived. If the transaction is showing as pending in their wallet, it's on its way — just wait. If nothing shows at all, it's possible they scanned the wrong code or didn't confirm the send. Generate a new payment request and try again.
What if the customer overpays or underpays? ▼
Bitcoin's price fluctuates by the second, so small differences between the displayed amount and the received amount are normal. OrangeTill generates QR codes with the exact amount calculated at current rates. If a customer sends a slightly different amount due to rounding in their wallet, that's generally fine — handle it like you would a minor rounding difference with cash. For significant underpayments, you can ask the customer to send a second transaction for the remainder. For overpayments, you can refund the difference from your wallet directly.
Can Bitcoin payments be reversed or charged back? ▼
No. Bitcoin transactions are irreversible by design — once sent on the blockchain, they cannot be undone by anyone, including OrangeTill. This is one of the primary advantages of Bitcoin for merchants: zero chargebacks. If you choose to offer refunds, you send Bitcoin back to the customer from your own wallet manually. OrangeTill does not facilitate refunds.
I accidentally tapped Payment Received ▼
Go to the History tab, find the incorrect entry, and delete it. This only affects your local records — it has no effect on the blockchain. The actual transaction (if one was sent) still exists on-chain regardless of what OrangeTill shows.
Wrong amount was entered ▼
Tap Cancel on the QR screen and start over. Never tap Payment Received if the amount is wrong. If a customer has already scanned and sent the wrong amount, see the overpayment/underpayment question above.
How does Lightning Network work with OrangeTill? ▼
Lightning Network is a payment layer built on top of Bitcoin that enables instant, near-zero-fee transactions. To use it, go to
Settings and enter your Lightning Address (this looks like an email address, e.g.
[email protected] — provided by wallet apps like Strike, Cash App, Muun, or Phoenix). Once entered, a Lightning payment option appears alongside your other coins when generating a payment request. Customers using Lightning-compatible wallets can pay instantly with no on-chain wait.
Rates won't load ▼
Check your internet connection and try refreshing the page. If you're on a weak signal, rates may take a few extra seconds to appear. If rates still won't load after refreshing, check that your device's Wi-Fi is connected and try again. OrangeTill pulls live rates from blockchain.info (BTC) and Coinbase (altcoins) — if either service has an outage, rates may be temporarily unavailable.
QR code won't scan ▼
Try the Copy or Share button below the QR code instead — the customer can paste the address directly into their wallet app. Other things to try: increase screen brightness, ask the customer to move their phone closer, or try a different wallet app. If the QR code is not rendering at all, close and reopen OrangeTill.
App looks frozen or unresponsive ▼
Close the browser tab and reopen
orangetill.io. Your settings and payment history are synced to the cloud and saved locally — nothing will be lost. If you're on a dedicated device, you may also try a full browser refresh (pull down to refresh on mobile, or Ctrl/Cmd+R on desktop). If the problem persists, check your Wi-Fi connection.
The app isn't showing my wallet address ▼
Go to Settings and check that your wallet address is entered and saved. Make sure the coin you're trying to accept is toggled on. If your address looks correct but still isn't showing, try logging out and back in, which forces a fresh sync from the server.
Payments aren't showing up in my History ▼
OrangeTill's History tab shows payments you've manually marked as received by tapping "Payment Received." It does not automatically pull transactions from the blockchain — you confirm each payment. If a payment is missing from History, it was either not confirmed in the app, or was deleted. You can always verify received transactions directly in your wallet app, which is the authoritative record.
Magic link email isn't arriving ▼
Check your spam or junk folder — magic links come from
[email protected]. If it's not in spam, make sure you're using the exact email address you subscribed with. Magic links expire after 15 minutes — request a new one if it's been a while. If you're consistently not receiving emails, try adding
[email protected] to your contacts or safe senders list.
OrangeTill is running slowly on my device ▼
OrangeTill is a lightweight web app and should run smoothly on any device made in the last several years. If it feels slow: check that your browser is up to date, close other tabs to free up memory, and confirm your Wi-Fi signal is strong. On older Amazon Fire tablets, clearing the browser cache (Settings → Apps → Silk Browser → Clear Cache) can help.
What is a Bitcoin wallet? ▼
A Bitcoin wallet is an app that holds your Bitcoin. It's like a bank account you control entirely — no bank, no middleman. When customers pay you with OrangeTill, the Bitcoin goes directly into your wallet. OrangeTill never holds your funds. See our
complete guide to crypto wallets for a plain-English explanation.
Which wallet should I use to receive payments? ▼
It depends on whether you want Lightning support:
- Bitcoin + Lightning: Muun Wallet, Phoenix, or Strike are excellent. Muun handles both on-chain and Lightning automatically.
- Bitcoin only: BlueWallet or Blockstream Green are solid self-custody options.
Visit
orangetill.com/start for our full wallet recommendation guide.
Where do I find my wallet address? ▼
In your wallet app, look for a Receive button. Tapping it will show your address — a long string of letters and numbers — usually alongside a QR code. Copy this address and paste it into OrangeTill's Settings. Make sure you copy your Bitcoin address exactly.
Can I use an exchange wallet (Coinbase, Kraken) to receive payments? ▼
Technically yes, but it's not recommended. Exchange wallets sometimes change or rotate deposit addresses, which would break your OrangeTill QR codes. Exchange wallets also mean a third party holds your funds — if the exchange has issues, you may lose access. A self-custody wallet (one where you control the private keys) is always the better option for a merchant receiving regular payments.
How do I get my Bitcoin into dollars? ▼
There are a few common approaches: send your Bitcoin to a Coinbase or Kraken account and sell it for USD, then withdraw to your bank. Some merchants use Strike, which can automatically convert Lightning Network payments to USD on receipt. See our
auto-convert guide for more options.
I can't log in ▼
Request a new magic link by entering your email on the login screen at
orangetill.io. Check your spam folder if it doesn't arrive within a minute — emails come from
[email protected]. Magic links expire after 15 minutes, so request a fresh one if needed. Make sure you're using the exact email address associated with your subscription.
Can I use OrangeTill on multiple devices? ▼
Yes. Your OrangeTill account works on as many devices as you need simultaneously. Log in with the same email on each device. Settings and payment history sync across devices automatically.
How do I change my wallet address? ▼
Go to Settings in the OrangeTill app, find the coin you want to update, and enter your new wallet address. Tap Save. New payment requests will immediately use the updated address.
How do I delete my account? ▼
Email us at
[email protected] with your account email and a request for deletion. We'll remove your account and all associated data. Note that canceling your subscription (from Settings) stops future billing but doesn't delete your account — if you want full data deletion, email us directly.
How much does OrangeTill cost? ▼
OrangeTill offers paid plans billed monthly or annually, and most include a free trial. See full pricing and plan details at
orangetill.com/#pricing. There are no percentage fees on transactions — ever. You pay only the flat subscription.
How do I cancel my subscription? ▼
Go to Settings in the OrangeTill app and find the Subscription section. From there you can manage or cancel your plan. Cancellations take effect at the end of your current billing period — you keep full access until then. We don't offer prorated refunds for partial periods, but if something went wrong, reach out and we'll sort it out.
What payment methods do you accept for subscriptions? ▼
Subscriptions are processed through Stripe and accept all major credit and debit cards.
Is there a free trial? ▼
Yes — most plans include a free trial: 10 days on Starter, 60 days on Annual, 30 days on Nonprofit Monthly, and 90 days on Nonprofit Annual. Growth is the only plan without one. See
pricing for what's included in each plan.
Is OrangeTill safe to use? ▼
OrangeTill is a non-custodial tool — we never hold, transmit, or have access to your Bitcoin. Payments go directly from your customer's wallet to yours on the blockchain. Your wallet addresses are stored in your account, and your session is protected by magic link authentication. Our infrastructure runs on Cloudflare, one of the most secure hosting platforms available.
What happens if OrangeTill goes down? ▼
Your Bitcoin is always in your wallet — it's never at risk from OrangeTill service interruptions. If OrangeTill is temporarily unavailable, the only thing affected is your ability to generate new QR codes. Your funds, your wallet, and your payment history stored locally are unaffected. For service status, check
cloudflarestatus.com.
How do I keep my wallet secure? ▼
The most important thing is to
protect your seed phrase — the 12 or 24 words generated when you set up your wallet. Write it down on paper, store it somewhere safe offline, and never share it with anyone. Anyone with your seed phrase has complete access to your wallet. OrangeTill will never ask for your seed phrase. See our
wallet security guide for a full breakdown.
Can a customer scam me with a fake Bitcoin payment? ▼
The main risk is a customer claiming they sent payment when they didn't. The safeguard:
always verify in your wallet app before releasing goods. Don't tap "Payment Received" based on a customer's say-so — verify the transaction arrived in your wallet. On-chain transactions are irreversible once confirmed, so a confirmed payment is a real payment. Lightning Network payments are also settled instantly and definitively. See our
security guide for more scenarios.
