What is a PWA, and why does it matter?
A Progressive Web App (PWA) is a website that can be installed on your device and behaves like a native app — it gets its own icon on your home screen, opens full-screen without a browser address bar, and works faster because assets are cached locally.
For OrangeTill, this means:
- No App Store approval process. OrangeTill can ship updates instantly — when you open the app, you always have the latest version.
- No download required. A customer who wants to try OrangeTill can be up and running in under two minutes.
- Runs on everything. iPad, Android tablet, iPhone, Android phone, Windows laptop, Mac — if it has a modern browser, it can run OrangeTill.
- Works offline for display. Once loaded, OrangeTill can display your active payment screen even with a spotty connection.
Installing OrangeTill on every device
The install process varies slightly by browser and operating system. Find your device below.
- Open Safari and navigate to orangetill.io
- Tap the Share button — the box with an arrow pointing up, in the bottom toolbar on iPhone or top toolbar on iPad
- Scroll down in the share sheet and tap "Add to Home Screen"
- Edit the name if you like (it defaults to "OrangeTill"), then tap "Add" in the top right
- The OrangeTill icon now appears on your home screen. Tap it to open full-screen.
⚠️ PWA install on iOS only works in Safari. Chrome and Firefox on iPhone can open OrangeTill fine, but the "Add to Home Screen" option in those browsers doesn't create a true PWA — it just saves a shortcut that opens in the browser. Use Safari for the real install.
- Open Chrome and navigate to orangetill.io
- Tap the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top right corner
- Tap "Add to Home screen" or "Install app" — the wording varies slightly by Android version
- Tap "Add" or "Install" to confirm
- OrangeTill now appears in your app drawer and on your home screen
On newer Android versions (12+), Chrome may show an install banner automatically at the bottom of the screen when you visit orangetill.io. You can tap that banner directly instead of going through the menu.
- Open Silk Browser (the default Fire browser) and navigate to orangetill.io
- Tap the menu icon (three dots or the hamburger menu) in the browser toolbar
- Tap "Add to Home screen"
- Confirm by tapping "Add"
Alternatively, you can install Chrome on a Fire tablet through the Amazon Appstore (search "Chrome") and use Chrome's Add to Home Screen — this gives you a slightly more polished PWA experience. Either browser works fine for daily use.
- In Chrome: navigate to orangetill.io, then click the install icon (⊕) in the address bar on the right side — or go to the three-dot menu and select "Install OrangeTill..."
- In Safari: navigate to orangetill.io, go to File → Add to Dock (macOS Sonoma and later). OrangeTill opens as its own app window from the Dock.
- Either way, OrangeTill gets its own window without the browser chrome — clean and full-screen.
- Open Chrome or Edge and navigate to orangetill.io
- In Chrome: click the install icon (⊕) in the address bar, or go to the three-dot menu and select "Install OrangeTill..."
- In Edge: click the Apps icon in the toolbar (or go to Settings → Apps → Install this site as an app)
- Click Install to confirm — OrangeTill appears in your Start menu and taskbar
✓ Tap the OrangeTill icon — it should open full-screen with no browser address bar
✓ Log in with your email
✓ Generate a test payment and confirm the QR code displays cleanly
✓ If you're on a dedicated counter device, set OrangeTill as the only accessible app (Screen Pinning on Android, Guided Access on iPad)
Can I run OrangeTill on my existing POS terminal?
Many merchants already have a POS system at the register — Square, Clover, Toast, Shopify POS — and want to know if they can run OrangeTill on the same device rather than buying a dedicated tablet. The answer depends entirely on whether the POS hardware allows browser access.
Here's the rundown for the most common systems.
Clover is the strongest option for running OrangeTill alongside an existing POS. Clover devices include Clover Browser — a Mozilla-based browser built into the admin interface. It's accessible from the Clover dashboard and is capable enough to run OrangeTill. Navigate to orangetill.io in Clover Browser, log in, and you can operate both systems from the same terminal.
The Clover Flex (handheld Android device) and Clover Mini are the most practical for counter use. The full Clover Station has the largest screen. The Clover Go (card reader only) does not have a browser. Recommended workflow: run your Clover POS for card transactions and switch to the OrangeTill tab in Clover Browser when a customer wants to pay crypto.
Any POS that runs as an iPad app — Square POS, Shopify POS, Lightspeed Restaurant, and others — leaves Safari fully available alongside it. Press the home button (or swipe up) to exit the POS app, open Safari, navigate to orangetill.io, and you're running OrangeTill. Better yet: install OrangeTill as a PWA (using the Safari instructions above) so it's one tap from the home screen.
For a cleaner workflow, consider a two-screen setup: your iPad runs the regular POS, and a small dedicated device (an old iPhone, a Fire HD 8) sits next to it running OrangeTill full-time. This eliminates any switching between apps at checkout.
Toast runs on locked Android hardware — the Toast terminals, handheld devices, and kiosks are purpose-built and do not expose a general-purpose browser. You cannot open orangetill.io from a Toast terminal.
Recommended solution: a dedicated OrangeTill device next to the Toast terminal. A $60–$100 Amazon Fire tablet on a small counter stand alongside your Toast setup is the cleanest solution — two separate screens, each doing its job. Many Toast merchants already use a second screen for customer-facing display; this is the same idea.
Square Terminal (the all-in-one card device) and Square Register (the dedicated dual-screen system) run locked Android and do not have a general browser. Square POS on an iPad, however, is a different story — see the iPad-based POS entry above.
Recommended solution: same as Toast — a dedicated OrangeTill device sitting alongside your Square Terminal. The Square Terminal is compact, so a small phone-sized device running OrangeTill fits neatly on the same counter without crowding.
Stripe Terminal is a card reader that connects to your existing software — it doesn't have its own screen or browser. If your Stripe Terminal is connected to a tablet or laptop running your own software, you can run OrangeTill in a separate browser tab on that same device. If you're using a dedicated Stripe Terminal reader (BBPOS, Verifone, etc.), you need a separate device for OrangeTill.
Switching between apps at a busy register adds friction and invites mistakes. A dedicated OrangeTill device — even an inexpensive one — means your staff never has to exit the POS to take a Bitcoin payment. The customer sees a clean, full-screen QR code on its own screen. Transactions are smoother for everyone.
